About.com’s Urban Legends guru, David Emery, debunks the story that had been circulating the internet. The rumor claimed that seven died after Tide detergent samples that they had received in the mail. Supposedly, it was contaminated with anthrax.
The anthrax rumor resurfaced in the last couple of days, but it’s actually nearly a decade old. Proctor & Gamble, makers of Tide, addressed the hoax last year by posting this on the company message board [via About.com]:
I work for the Tide brand, I can 100% confirm that the text message going around is not true. From time to time people do this kind of thing as a prank, unfortunately there is little we can do other than to share the fact that this is completely unfounded.
