After discovering spider webs in the vents, the Japanese automaker is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars from the 2009-2010 model years in the United States and an additional 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The company said Thursday a spider could weave a web in a vent connected to the fuel tank system and clog up the tank’s ventilation. Pressure on the fuel tank could lead to a crack, causing fuel leakage and the risk of a fire.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said dealers had identified 20 cases in which spider webs were found in the vents. The webs were linked to yellow sac spiders, Barnes said, but it was unclear why they were crawling into the Mazda6 rather than other vehicles.

Adding to the mystery, Barnes said the arachnoid attraction to the sporty cars – which the company has marketed with its “zoom-zoom” tagline – had no specific connection to a particular region of North America.

The recall involves vehicles with 2.5 liter engines built from April 2008 to February 2010.

Owners will be notified by mid-March and told to take their vehicles to dealers for inspection and repairs. Dealers will inspect and clean up the vent line and install a spring to prevent a spider from entering the vent line.

Porsche 918 RSR

This is the future of Porsche racing, says CEO Matthias Mueller. It is a single-seat racecar with 767 total horsepower based on a V8 engine and flywheel technology at each wheel. The hybrid component is based on the same configuration found in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS hybrid and the 918 Spyder that will be produced in limited numbers in the next few years.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

This is the electric version of the popular SLS AMG Gullwing that went on sale last year. Its four motors (a pair at each axle, integrated with reduction gears to drive all four wheels at the same time) combine to provide 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque and a zero-to-60 time of 4 seconds. The production model will be on sale in 2013. The one here in Detroit is painted a shade of yellow called “AMG Lumilectric Mango.”

Bentley Continental GT

This is a significant update to Bentley’s main-selling Continental. It has the same 6.0-liter W12 engine but is 140 pounds lighter (read: faster) and has an updated driver interface with real-time traffic updates and iPod integration. Nine hundred will be made for the American market this year.

BMW 1-Series M Coupe

Detroit is the stage for the official debut of the long-awaited 1-Series M Coupe, with sales starting later in the spring. BMW used a new twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that gets 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60 mph time is 4.7 seconds, with a top speed limited to 155 mph. The production run is limited to 2,700 units. Pricing will start near $45,000.

Ferrari 458 Italia

An oldie but a goodie, the 458 Italia is always hot. It has a V8 rear-mounted engine that gets 562 horsepower and goes zero to 60 in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 202 mph. Transmission is 7-speed F-1 format with a dual-clutch gearbox. The car has an all-aluminum frame and body, complete with carbon ceramic brakes and 20” rims.

Audi R8 GT

This car debuted last spring, but the novelty hasn’t worn off yet. It is even lighter than the standard R8, which helps it get to 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds and on to 124 mph in 10.6 seconds. Top speed is a sizzling 198.8 mph

Jaguar XKR Coupe

This car has a great combination of style and speed. It’s a V8, 510-horsepower supercharged coupe that comes with adaptive lights, chrome accents, rear parking aid, LED tail lamps, rear fog lights and xenon headlights. Pricing starts at $96,125 (convertible $102,125).

Li-Ion INIZIO

The $139,000 electric supercar prototype will cruise 250 miles before needing a charge and can hit top speeds of 170 miles per hour, according to the manufacturer. Zero-to-60 speed is set to 3.4 seconds–which is even more impressive considering the leather seats, 12-inch woofer, DVD/navigation system and rise-away doors weighing it down.

Tesla Roadster

The Lotus-based roaster has been with us for awhile (1,500 of them have been sold since 2008), but it’s notable for what it looks like–an electric vehicle much more compelling than a Chevrolet Volt or a Nissan LEAF–and for its technology (Tesla and Toyota have entered into an agreement to use Tesla battery technology in the RAV-4). The tech in the Model S, Tesla’s five-person sedan due out in 2012, will continue the precedent started by the roadster, says Tesla’s VP of engineering, Peter Rawlinson.

Maybach 62S

Granted, this huge sedan is hot in a staid way. But we’re pretty sure any man climbing out won’t have too much trouble finding a date. The engine is an enormous V12 that has a five-speed automatic transmission and 620 horsepower. It goes zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds, which is resoundingly good considering the car’s size and weight. Options include electric sliding side window curtains, front/rear intercom, solar-powered ventilation, a retractable glass partition wall and a perfume dispenser.

The Chevrolet Volt has won yet another major award: The North American Car of the Year. The Volt beat out two other finalists, the Hyundai Sonata and the battery-powered Nissan Leaf. The North American Truck of the Year is the Ford Explorer, which beat out the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango. The announcement was made Monday at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, where General Motors first showed the Volt as a concept car four years ago.

After nearly four years of anticipation, many car critics are saying the Volt’s performance is impressive. With a starting price of about $41,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, the Volt travels between 25 to 50 miles on an electric charge before a gasoline-engine switches on to generate more electricity. Since its introduction in December, Chevrolet has sold 326 Volts.

The Truck of the Year, the 2011 Ford Explorer, was launched in December. A media drive late last year showed that it easily travels over deep sand ruts and steep hills even though it is built off a car platform – the same one as the Ford Taurus sedan. Dealers from California to Pennsylvania say the Explorer shows signs of being a hit with customers.

The Explorer also gets 25 miles per gallon on the highway and 17 mpg in the city, putting it at the head of its class for fuel economy.

Ford’s first-ever gas free, zero emissions fully electric car.The Ford Focus Electric is powered entirely by a 23 kilowatt hour lithium ion battery, and capable of a top speed of 84 miles per hour. When plugged into a home charging station, it can fill up a battery in just over three hours.

The eco-friendly vehicle is also made from 100% sustainable materials –even using recycled blue jeans in the insulation on the bottom of the car. It’s loaded with high tech touches including Ford’s Sync in-vehicle communications system, co-developed with Microsoft, and the Sirius Travel Link satellite radio entertainment system.

Ford also used the keynote to announce My Ford Mobile, a smartphone application that links up with the computer in Focus Electric, providing a information like how far the car will drive on its current charge, individual driving trends, and the location of nearby charging stations. The system can send a text message to a driver when the car is charged and ready to drive.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized 66 vehicles on Wednesday with its “top safety pick award” for the 2011 model year, the most-ever awarded by the Virginia-based group. The number was more than double the 27 vehicles selected last year. Hyundai Motor Corp. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp., and Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand received the most awards with nine, followed by eight awards apiece by General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. The awards, used in advertising to attract car buyers, bolster Hyundai and Volkswagen as they attempt to build a larger foothold in the United States.

Hyundai’s Genesis sedan, Sonata midsize and Santa Fe and Tucson sport utility vehicles picked up awards, while Kia was recognized for the Optima midsize car, the Forte and Soul small cars, and the Sorento and Sportage SUVs. Volkswagen won plaudits for the Jetta and Jetta SportWagen, the Golf and GTI small cars and the Touareg and Tiguan SUVs. Audi’s A3 and A4 sedans and Q5 SUV also made the list.

Subaru and Chrysler received five awards apiece while Volvo and Mercedes had four. Subaru was the only automaker to win awards in every vehicle category in which it competes. Nissan and Honda had two awards each and Mitsubishi and BMW had one.

Hyundai said the award was particularly sweet for the Sonata, which also received the top score of five stars in the government’s crash test program. The combination put Sonata “in a safety position unsurpassed in the industry,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

GM’s winners include the Chevrolet Malibu, Cruze and Equinox; Cadillac CTS and SRX; Buick LaCrosse and Regal and GMC Terrain.

Ford’s picks include the Ford Taurus, Fusion, Fiesta, Explorer and Flex; and the Lincoln MKS, MKZ and MKT.

Toyota, which has grappled with several high-profile recalls during the past year, scored with the Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Sienna, Highlander and Venza; the Lexus RX; and the Scion tC and xB.

The vehicles were chosen for protection in front, side and rear crash tests. To qualify for the award, the insurance industry group also requires the vehicles to have anti-rollover electronic stability control, or ESC, and receive top scores in roof strength tests.

3. Ford C-Max

The Scoop: The C-MAX is part of Ford’s global small vehicle strategy to deliver 10 models–2 million vehicles annually–from a single C-vehicle platform by 2012. It also has Ford’s first application of the 1.6-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine in its North American C-class vehicles. The aluminum engine combines direct injection, turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing for fuel economy 20% better than naturally aspirated, larger-displacement gasoline engines with a similar power output. C-MAX also has a power-operated rear liftgate, five seats in the main cabin and two smaller seats in the third row, twin sliding doors, active park assist with a special system that will automatically parallel-park the car.

4. Hyundai Veolster

The Scoop: This production vehicle is a sporty 2+2 coupe with a strong technology component. It’s targeted to younger buyers and will likely be cheaper, more fuel efficient and trendier than the performance-oriented Genesis coupe.

5. Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell

6. MINI Paceman Concept

The Scoop: The Paceman is a coupe, like the MINI Cooper, but it’s based on the four-door MINI Countryman. That leaves us with something that sits higher than the Cooper and that will probably be trimmed to a higher degree than that coupe. The concept comes with an all-wheel-drive system and a John Cooper Works-tuned turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 211 horsepower. It’ll come to market late 2012.

7. Porsche Supercar

The Scoop: This is the first time in four years that Porsche will have a booth at the Detroit show (they stopped going in 2007 to focus more on efforts at the Los Angeles shindig). The Stuttgart-based manufacturer has said it’ll bring something “spectacular ” to show but is staying mum about what–they won’t even say whether it’s a hybrid racer or something more extreme. Smart money is saying it will be a close-to-production version of something akin to the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid, which Porsche has said will be road-ready in 2013. 8. Toyota Prius MPV

The Scoop: Photos of this have been leaked already, but Toyota has been strict about saving the debut of this three-row, seven-passenger hybrid for Detroit. The van will use a 1.8-liter hybrid engine (the same used in the five-door hatch version) with a total output of 138 horsepower. [Note: The car shown is the Toyota FT-CH Dedicated Hybrid Concept].

9. Tesla Model S

The Scoop: Tesla will focus primarily on “vehicle engineering ” this year in Detroit, it says, and the S will play a main part of that. The California-based carmaker says it already has 3,000 buyers lined up for the electric sedan, which is set to be delivered in 2012. The car has room for five adults and can come with a 160-mile, 220-mile, or 300-mile battery pack. Tesla says the car will go from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, with a top speed of 120 miles per hour.

Pricing: $56,400 (minus a $7,500 federal tax credit)

10. Venturi America

The Scoop: This 300-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive electric buggy-coupe debuted at the Paris Motor Show last fall and will be on the stand again in Detroit. While the car is still in a concept stage, the fact that Venturi recently launched Venturi North America in Columbus, Ohio, at least means the company hopes to develop its presence more in the states. The car uses a 54 kWh battery pack made of lithium ion polymer batteries that provide a cruising range of 186 miles. It comes with an on-board charger that will refuel with a standard electrical outlet or a specialized high-volt charger.

1. GMC Sierra All Terrain HD

Specs: This concept has a V8 diesel powertrain with 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft. of torque. It could be GM’s answer to Ford’s Raptor and Dodge’s Power Wagon Rams, which dominate the off-road market. This version has a wider, 73-inch track for greater stability, three additional inches of ground clearance, specially constructed Fox off-road shocks with remote fluid reservoirs, and 35-inch-tall BFGoodrich KM2 “mud terrain” tires mounted on 20-inch aluminum wheels. It’ll make its public debut in January at the North American International Auto show in Detroit.
MSRP: No price is associated with the All Terrain, as this version at least is only a concept.

2. Ford F-Series

Specs: This is the classic American truck, from the nation’s bestselling series for 33 years straight. There are lots of variations, from the $22,415 F-150 to the $47,195 Lariat Limited, plus special runs like the $47,995 Harley Davidson. But Ford’s done it right for decades.
MSRP: $22,415

3. Toyota Tundra Sportsman Edition

Specs: This is a 2011 Tundra Double-Cab 4X4 from Bass Pro Shop and Toyota with an optional TRD Rock Warrior package and a 5.7-liter V8 automatic engine. The truck is lifted three inches and comes with 18-inch Teflon-coated wheels and 33-inch “mud grappler ” tires. It has bucket seats, camouflaged floor mats, a fold-down workbench, steel locking rifle cases and a pistol safe–not to mention a hunting platform above the roof of the truck and a ladder to get up there.
MSRP: Tundra Sportsman was a one-of-a-kind project created for the 2010 SEMA show. It can been seen at some Bass Pro Shop locations but is not for sale on the mass market.

4. Jeep Wrangler Black Ops Edition

Specs: This Jeep is a special offer for fans of “Call of Duty: Black Ops”–the Activision videogame that came out in November. It has Rubicon trim with alloy wheels, 32-inch tires, Black Ops logos and a murdered-out exterior.

5. Chrysler Ram Laramie Longhorn

Specs: This tough truck made a fitting debut at the Texas State Fair last September (Texans sure do love their trucks–the state makes up roughly 17% of all U.S. truck sales). The Laramie is the luxury version of the Ram 1500, and it’s quite luxurious indeed: It comes with full-grain leather, real-wood trim, chrome wheels, soft lighting in the foot wells, and Southwestern design cues like leather saddle bags and gold trim reminiscent of Western-style antique watches. The Laramie Longhorn goes on sale this spring.

6. Cadillac Escalade EXT

Specs: This giant is more like a luxury SUV than a straight-up truck: Standard amenities include heated mirrors, xenon headlamps, privacy glass, a luggage rack, leather bucket seats, dual-zone climate control, a tilting sunroof, XM radio, Bluetooth, remote vehicle start and a reverse camera. The V8 engine and 403-horsepower give a max payload of 1,342 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,600 pounds.

7. Hennessey VelociRaptor

Specs: The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is one cool truck–the twin-turbo Hennessey VeolicRaptor version is even cooler: It has a 6.2-liter V8 that gets 810 horsepower and 0-60 in less than six seconds. Or if that’s too much for everyday use, buy the 605-hp or 475-hp editions. They’ll still blow your mind. Extras over the regular Raptor include forged aluminum pistons, forged steel conrods, dual intercoolers, an electronic boost controller, a recalibrated engine management system, stainless-steel exhaust and upgraded transmission.
MSRP: Base price of the 2011 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is $41,550. The upgrade package starts at $22,950, plus $7,000 for installation.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Santa Fe, a nice-looking, dependable crossover with a long list of standard features, is a smart choice at $21,000 to $27,000. But it’s in short supply, partly because production was recently shifted from Hyundai’s Alabama factory to a new plant in Georgia owned by its sister company, Kia Motors. Santa Fes spend an average of just seven days on dealer lots.

Lexus LS 460

Lexus lowered the base price on all-wheel-drive versions of its flagship sedan for 2011 after making the once-standard air suspension optional instead. Even though November sales of the LS were up 21%, the 2011 model wasn’t available in great numbers. The average days to turn for 2011 models was nine.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The all-new Outlander Sport, starting at $19,000, is a slightly smaller version of Mitsubishi’s top of the line Outlander crossover vehicle. It comes with a more fuel-efficient engine and seats five instead of seven. But it’s still hard to find: The average Outlander Sport sells in just nine days.

Honda Element

Honda said recently it will discontinue the boxy Element after the 2011 model year. It couldn’t compete with many newer crossovers, including Honda’s own CR-V. If you want one, better move fast. The 2011 Element is hard to find; production is limited and most sell out within 10 days.

Nissan Juke

The smallest new crossover from Nissan, around $19,000, is inspired by motorsports. But good luck finding one–the Juke sells quickly, usually within 10 days of arriving at dealerships.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota doesn’t produce a ton of Land Cruisers, and sales are down for the year. The 2011 model is unchanged from 2010, but it’s still fairly hard to find, spending an average of just 11 days on dealer lots.

Audi S5

The high-performance version of Audi’s sleek and sexy A5 starts at $53,000–if you can find one. The S5 usually sells within 12 days of arriving at dealerships

Subaru Forester

With standard all-wheel-drive and ample cargo space, this small crossover enjoyed a 27% sales jump in November compared to a year ago. That’s why the 2011 models don’t spend much time on dealer lots–an average of 12 days, says Edmunds.com.

Toyota dealers are still clearing out 2010 models for the wagon-like Venza, so there aren’t many 2011s to be found (average days to turn for 2011 model: 12). But it doesn’t really matter–Venza is unchanged for the new model year.

Volkswagen Touareg

Redesigned for the 2011 model year, the Touareg is still arriving in dealerships. It’s available now with a hybrid engine, too. For now, though, the new Touareg is hard to find, spending an average of 12 days on dealers’ lots.
